The application of nitric acid is mainly carried out to prevent clogging of emitters and to improve the quality of saline water, as acidifying the water causes the decomposition of the bicarbonates that are present, thus preventing the formation of insoluble compounds of calcium and magnesium.
It supplies nitrogen, and therefore must be considered when fertilizing with this nutrient. The vegetative period of the crop has to be considered to avoid causing nutritional disorders by applying the product at times when the plants do not require nitrogen.

It can be applied directly to irrigation water by pumps that are resistant to acids. Given the exothermic reaction caused when it is dissolved in water, it favours the solubility of other solid fertilizers which, on the contrary, can produce a drop in temperature when added.
It should be applied weekly or monthly to clean pipes.
It is also used in the preparation of stock solutions when the pH needs lowering.
