Nitric acid is obtained by an oxidation reaction of ammonia with a platinum catalyst, producing nitrous gases which are absorbed by the water.

Nitric acid is produced in concentrations from 53% to 69% and can be used in many different applications:

  • Chemistry of nylon 6.6 (artificial fibres, plastic parts for cars).
  • Polyurethane: insulation, foams, paints.
  • Nitrocellulose: varnishes and paints, civil explosives, dyes.
  • Special chemistry.
  • Cleaning products for the agro-food industry.
  • Mineral treatment.

Form of application

With regard to agricultural use, nitric acid can be applied directly to irrigation water by pumps that are particularly resistant to acids. Given the exothermic reaction caused when it is dissolved in water, it favours the solubility of other solid fertilisers which, on the contrary, can produce a drop in temperature.

It is also used in the preparation of stock solutions when the pH needs lowering. The vegetative period of the crop has to be considered to avoid causing nutritional disorders by applying the product at times when the plants do not require nitrogen.
