Química del Estroncio, a high-tech Spanish company dedicated mainly to the production of strontium salts used in multiple applications worldwide in the ceramics, glass, pigments, pyrotechnics, zinc, electronics and other industries, was founded in 1996.

The start-up of the production plant located in Valle de Escombreras (Cartagena) in 2000 marked the culmination of an important industrial project, developed with its own technology, based on the mineral celestine (strontium sulphate) to obtain high-quality strontium carbonate and nitrate, being the first and only European factory to produce this strontium nitrate salt.

In 2002, it became an integral part of Fertiberia, obtaining an extra boost to develop new production lines of high-end fertilisers. Together, we form an even stronger and more complete group capable of offering soluciones expert solutions that keep us at the forefront of the sector.

The Química del Estroncio facilities are located in the strategic location of Valle de Escombreras in Cartagena (Spain), an industrial area very close to the city's commercial port.

World leaders in the processing of strontium sulphate (celestine)

By means of a pioneering process worldwide, we obtain strontium nitrate from the mineral celestine (or strontium sulphate), without the prior need for strontium carbonate, which gives us a great competitive advantage.

  • Instead of the commonly used chemical reduction process known as “Black Ash”, we use an innovative manufacturing process which, in one of its intermediate stages, produces the raw material for the production of crystal strontium nitrate.

For the production of another of our strontium salts, strontium carbonate, we have also developed a process that is unique in the world. This process is based on a double purification and carbonation from carbon dioxide and ammonia, without sulphur and with very low levels of iron and sodium.


The strontium salts obtained are available in three different grades: QPF (fine powder), QPC (coarse powder) and QG (granular).

  • In their QG format, they are a key raw material in the manufacture of glass substrate for LCD screens, used in TVs, computers, PDAs, iPADs and mobile phones and in particular demand in manufacturing countries such as Japan, China, Korea and Taiwan.
  • They are also used in pyrotechnics and for flare signalling and other devices for civil and military use, as well as in the production of pigments and paints (QPC format) and other products derived from the chemical and pharmaceutical industry.
  • Another use is in the manufacture ofairbags in the automotive industry and, in its QPF format, it is widely used in the ceramics industry, in the production of magnetic ferrites and in the electrolysis of zinc.

We understand quality as a deep understanding and assumption of the needs and expectations of all stakeholders (our staff, external and internal customers and society as a whole). This has led us to establish and develop an integrated quality management system based on the UNE-EN ISO-9001:2015 standard. For the analytical control of all the flows originating in the operation of our factory, we have a complete physicochemical laboratory equipped with the necessary technical means and in which we use standardised and/or validated methods of analysis in accordance with the Official Standards, always meeting the specifications of our customers. In this way, all the products we produce are guaranteed by the applicable quality assurance and quality control techniques. Certificates of approval:

Contributing to the protection of the planet is a priority for us. Therefore, the development of our products, processes and services is carried out under the premise of having the least possible impact on the environment. For this reason, we have established and developed a Quality and Environmental Management System, which is based on the UNE EN ISO 9001:2015 and UNE EN ISO 14001:2015 standards, aiming at the continuous improvement of products, processes, services and environmental protection.

Here, we work to integrate environmental management into our daily business operations to ensure that environmental issues are addressed while providing a quality product to all our customers. And always in compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, regulations and requirements.

Our environmental commitment has enabled us to obtain the CARBON FOOTPRINT REGISTRY SEAL awarded by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which recognises our efforts to reduce CO2 and other greenhouse gases emitted at any stage of the production chain.


Occupational safety

We are convinced that prevention is the key to reducing accidents to zero at our facilities. For this reason, we permanently promote investment, training, information, training and management actions.

An example of this is that, since 2018, our plant has been recognised as a cardioprotected space as it has the necessary equipment and personnel to quickly and efficiently attend to people who may suffer cardiopulmonary arrest inside its facilities. We have several automatic external defibrillators that include control and traceability software which, together with trained personnel, serve to provide extra safety for our workers and visitors.

Our Safety Culture and professional rigour in providing safe environments have been recognised with various certificates: In 2018, we obtained certification under OSHAS 18001 and, in 2020, under ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (which replaced the previous one).
