Fertiberia joins GLOBALG.A.P. as an associate member to continue promoting responsible agriculture, caring for the environment and innovation
- GLOBALG.A.P. is an international brand of smart farm assurance solutions for agriculture, aquaculture, and floriculture, present in more than 130 countries.
Madrid, 14 May 2024 – Grupo Fertiberia has joined as an associate member of the GLOBALG.A.P. community. GLOBALG.A.P. c/o FoodPLUS GmbH is an international organization offering global certification standards for production processes that promote environmental responsibility and consumer food safety in agriculture, aquaculture and floriculture. Since it was founded, it has the support of more than 195,000 producers and more than 130 countries.
Fertiberia is the first company in its sector in the world to have committed to being Net Zero by 2035. The key to meeting this objective is to boost the production of low-carbon ammonia from renewable energy sources. To this end, the company is already transforming its production capacity on the Iberian Peninsula and is leading new initiatives in Sweden and Norway based on clean energy sources. This milestone represents a step forward in its commitment to become a real agent of change in the decarbonisation of the agricultural sector.
“At Fertiberia we have been working for years to guarantee safe, high added value and low carbon production because we truly believe that building a better world is a shared responsibility and concerns all citizens, but also companies and institutions,” says Javier Goñi, CEO of Grupo Fertiberia. “For this reason, we have joined the GLOBALG.A.P. Community, as it allows us to be part of an initiative that equips producers around the world with practical knowledge on responsible agricultural techniques, enabling them to obtain a globally valuable certification, meet changing market requirements and contribute to international sustainability goals.”
The Group has pioneered the production of low-carbon crop nutrition solutions and industrial products by replacing natural gas with green hydrogen in their manufacturing process. This is its Impact Zero product line, which is already used by companies such as Heineken (in its malting barley crops), PepsiCo (in its potato crops for snacks), Grupo Gallo (in the production of wheat used to make pasta), Marks&Spencer (in its agricultural farms), Vivescia (in its cereal crops) and the fruit and vegetable producer Primaflor in Almeria.
In addition, the company has a clear commitment to biotechnology, with operations such as the purchase of the company Trichodex, with almost three decades of research experience, and with highly innovative patents in the use of microorganisms to develop biofertilisers, bioprotectants and biostimulants, which move towards zero waste agriculture, highly valued by the end consumer and totally safe for the preservation of biodiversity.
“Joining the GLOBALG.A.P. Community emphasizes Fertiberia’s commitment to responsible agriculture and environmental stewardship, and we are delighted to have them on board,” says Elmé Coetzer-Boersma, Managing Director GLOBALG.A.P. c/o FoodPLUS GmbH. “Fertiberia’s portfolio contributes to a more sustainable future for global agriculture worldwide, in line with GLOBALG.A.P.’s vision and the sustainability goals of the international community in general. Together we have the opportunity to empower farmers and make a real impact.”
