bioSOILUTIONS Project

State:

ongoing

Its main objective is to implement innovative and effective fertilisers, which are produced from organic waste and by-products, to promote the recovery of soil quality and fertility.

Transforming biowaste into safe and effective soil enhancers

The objective of the bioSOILUTIONS project is to implement innovative and effective fertilisers, which are produced from organic waste and by-products, to promote the recovery of soil quality and fertility by reducing the use of chemical fertilisers, as well as to drive the circular economy by reducing the organic waste that is incinerated or sent to landfills.

It will primarily address soil degradation and the reduction of organic waste in and around the city. This project will be carried out entirely in a co-creation process in which the development of the circular economy and the participation of the business system will be essential components.

bioSOILUTIONS is built upon the experience of key European projects such as WaysTUP!, VALUEWASTE and Scalibur, in which consortium partners have already participated, thereby consolidating a strong track record in the use of biological waste to develop sustainable solutions.

This project explores the optimisation of four paths to achieving biological waste/by-product valorisation:

  • Slaughterhouse blood hydrolysates.
  • Frass (by-product of insect breeding).
  • N-struvite.
  • K-struvite.

The project will also entail the development of Living Labs in Flanders (Belgium), Valencia and Murcia as co-creation spaces that will involve the entire value chain—from farmers and research centres to companies, entrepreneurs, the fertiliser industry and political stakeholders—ensuring that the resulting products meet market needs and the European regulations currently in force.

Objective

To produce advanced fertilisers with the aim of improving nutrient recovery from biological waste (for example,, N, P, K, organic matter) and reduce discharges and incineration.

This biowaste raw material will be combined in different formulations along with key additives (for example,, non-microbial plant biostimulants, microbial plant biostimulants, and controlled-release nutrient coatings) to generate at least five soil fertilisers.

Participating entities

Partners:

The bioSOILUTIONS Project promotes a new generation of advanced fertilisers from biowaste, focusing on agricultural biotechnology as a key tool for the circular economy and the recovery of degraded soils. The valorisation of by-products such as blood hydrolysates, insect frass, and struvites enables the project to combine innovation and sustainability to transform waste into safe and effective agricultural solutions.
