Discover how PGPR bacteria transform almond crops: Benefits you can’t miss

Spain in terms of global almond production is especially noteworthy as it is the second largest producer worldwide (MAPA, 2024), only behind the United States, and it has the largest area dedicated to this crop, according to FAOSTAT data (2023). This position underlines the fundamental role of the almond tree in certain Spanish regions, where it represents a key cornerstone of the agricultural economy.

The onset of almond tree blossoming, with its delicate white and pink flowers, not only marks the beginning of the almond production season, but it is also a lovely scene that embellishes the fields (AEMET, 2025). The blossoming period is especially sensitive to weather conditions, and factors such as temperature, rain and wind can significantly influence the quantity and quality of almonds produced.

For this reason, proper monitoring and care of almond trees starting with blossoming is essential to ensure a successful harvest. Sustainable agricultural practices, such as comprehensive pest and disease management, efficient irrigation and balanced fertilisation, play a crucial role in optimising almond production and maintaining the long-term health of almond trees.

Innovation in almond crops

The search for sustainable and efficient improvement of almond production in the sector is ongoing. One innovative approach is the use of beneficial bacteria as a possible solution to achieve better crop yields.

BACNIFOS® is an innovative biological product that contains plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), also known as beneficial bacteria for plants. These rhizobacteria have been carefully selected and isolated for their proven ability to stimulate the growth and development of a wide range of agricultural crops. The rhizobacteria colonise the rhizosphere, the soil zone surrounding the roots, and promote plant growth through various mechanisms.

One of the main mechanisms of action of BACNIFOS® is the production of phytohormones, such as auxins, gibberellins and cytokinins. These phytohormones are natural plant growth regulators that stimulate cell division, cell elongation and tissue differentiation, which leads to greater root development, increased plant biomass and better crop yield.

The rhizobacteria present in BACNIFOS® solubilise the phosphorus and potassium present in the soil, making them more accessible to plant roots.

In short, BACNIFOS® is an effective and safe biological product that improves the growth, yield and health of agricultural crops. Its use contributes to more sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture. BACNIFOS® is a product registered under the UNE 142500 standard applicable to organic plant production.

Results in trials with almond trees

The trials carried out on almond trees of the “Lauranne” variety in their second year of production showed that the application of BACNIFOS® at 5 l/ha in 4 applications significantly increased production by 19.6% compared to plots where the microorganism was not applied.

CONCLUSIONS

  • 19.6% increase in shell production (kg/ha).
  • 58.63 kg/ha more grain production in trees in their second year of production.
