Madrid, 19 December 2023 – Fertiberia, a European leader in the high added value crop nutrition sector, is taking another step forward in its commitment to biotechnology with the launch of NSAFE®, a global pioneering technology that will enable a large part of the company’s fertiliser range to increase its capacity to protect soil biodiversity while improving crop yields. It is the first microbiological development on the market with a nitrification inhibiting effect. This technology allows fertilisers to enrich the soil through their microbial nature, thus offering a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemically synthesised inhibitors.
NSAFE® will be applied in a first phase in Fertiberia TECH’s Nergetic DZ+ range and will be progressively incorporated into the rest of the products in the Nergetic line in the coming years, thus providing a new differential factor with respect to the rest of the solutions on the market. This technology, which is the result of more than six years of research, will initially be launched on the Spanish market, where it has already been registered by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food after a meticulous certification process, and procedures are already underway for its internationalisation.
As Alfredo Segura, Commercial Director of the Grupo Fertiberia explains, “nitrogen is a key element for plant growth, but often some of it is lost in the soil or air due to leaching and volatilisation processes, which represents a significant challenge for farmers”. NSAFE® offers an innovative solution. “This pioneering technology protects nitrogen and prolongs its activity, remaining active in the soil for a longer amount of time and allowing plants to absorb it more slowly. And it does so with a twist: respecting microbial life and without having an impact on microorganisms present in the soil”.
NSAFE® is more efficient than any chemical inhibitor because, unlike the latter, it does not act on ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4+) like synthetic inhibitors do, but rather it acts on nitric nitrogen (NO3-) directly, being able to absorb it in its organic structure in protein form and release it in organic nitrogen form after the end of its life cycle.
Grupo Fertiberia is the first company in the sector to produce crop nutrition solutions on a large scale with green hydrogen and is executing the Net Zero plan to be carbon neutral by 2035. “In parallel to this drastic reduction in emissions from our products, with NSAFE® we are reinforcing our leadership in biotechnology and high added value agricultural solutions; this development is not only a breakthrough that will improve our product line, but is an important step towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture,” said Alfredo Segura.
