NSAFE® is the result of over six years of research and offers a more efficient, environmentally friendly alternative to conventional synthetic nitrification inhibitors.
This recognition highlights the value of a groundbreaking global technology that protects nitrogen and extends its availability in the soil, allowing for more efficient uptake by plants over time.
Madrid, 23/07/2025 – Fertiberia has been granted the European patent for NSAFE®, the first bio-based nitrification inhibitor on the market—an important milestone in the company’s innovation strategy and its firm commitment to biotechnology in agriculture. This recognition from the European Patent Office affirms the Group’s innovation capabilities and the pioneering nature of NSAFE®, a solution developed entirely by Fertiberia’s R&D team.
NSAFE® is the result of over six years of research and offers a more efficient, environmentally friendly alternative to conventional synthetic nitrification inhibitors. Thanks to its biological origin, NSAFE® enables fertilizers to release nitrogen in a more controlled manner with reduced losses, enriching the soil while preserving its natural balance.
One of NSAFE® ´s key differentiators is its mode of action: it protects nitrogen by prolonging its availability in the soil, allowing plants to absorb it progressively. Unlike traditional inhibitors, it does not disrupt microbial life in the soil, preserving beneficial microorganisms and promoting more sustainable fertilization practices.
“Obtaining the European patent for NSAFE® is a testament to the outstanding work of our innovation team, in association with the University of Leon, and a reflection of Fertiberia’s strong commitment to biotechnology—a strategic sector with immense global potential,” said Alfredo Segura, Fertilizers Sales Director at Grupo Fertiberia. “Our goal is to develop effective, sustainable solutions that help farmers remain competitive while safeguarding natural resources.”
Biotechnology in agriculture is emerging as a vital tool in addressing global challenges such as sustainability and food security. The European patent for NSAFE® marks another significant step in Fertiberia’s commitment to advancing more efficient, resilient, and environmentally responsible farming.
“At Fertiberia, we see innovation as a key driver of agricultural transformation. That’s why we’re investing in the development of biologically based technologies that enhance soil health and improve nutrient use efficiency,” said Juan Pablo Llobet, CEO of Grupo Fertiberia. “NSAFE®is a clear embodiment of this vision: a pioneering solution that not only optimizes nitrogen use but also demonstrates that sustainable fertilization can go hand-in-hand with productivity.”
